Target Audience Interviews
Person #1 (Male 18yrs old)

1. What is your most favourite song and why do you believe that it is better than other songs?

I would have to say that my most favourite song has to be Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO. I know it’s kind of new (released in early 2011) but I think it’s probably the best song I’ve heard in a while. I mean it just gets stuck in your head and it gets you energised. I think I prefer it to other songs because even though there are things a bit similar in that they use auto tune LMFAO are actually good using it rather then covering up bad signing.

2. What would you say has been the most influential music genre of modern times?

If we are talking about modern times then I would say that probably RnB and pop has become the main genre of modern times, with people like Beyoncé and Brittney spears, there probably famous because its easy to sings along with their songs and they nearly all the time have long and complicated dance routines so people try to learn it and believe that they could also be a musician.

3. What do you think makes a music video good?

I think a music video is good when Its completely original and is not like other music videos, for example ‘Gay Bar’ by the Electric six which is a funny video that has lots of Abraham Lincolns working out. I mean it makes no sense to me but its funny and I like it because its different from the usual rap videos which is most of the time a guy wearing too much jewellery and driving a sports car with women wearing bikinis.

4. How important is music for you?

I would say that music is very important to me. It helps me to think and be creative. Without it I think I would find it hard to find inspiration for when I’m drawing. Its really helpful for when I need to fully concentrate because it blocks out all annoying outside noise and just lets you listen to whatever you please, it really is important for me and I don’t know how I would cope without music.

5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?

The thing that I hate in a song is when its too long and gets really repetitive and your just waiting for it to finish, what I hate in music videos is dance routines. I mean what’s the point; I don’t understand the appeal of it. I find it so boring I didn’t want to watch the musician dance I want something more from a music video, like a story.

Person #2 (Male 45yrs old)

1. What is your most favourite song and why do you believe that it is better than other songs?

The best song of all time has to be ‘Love Gun’ by Kiss. Its just an all time classic, you will never get a better era for music. It’s my favourite song because it’s so full of emotion and energy you just can’t help but like it. I think that’s it’s a lot better then other songs especially songs you get now, there all too similar and have nothing which sets them apart from each other, they’ll be just another artist while a band like Kiss stands out from the rest even in rock.

2. What would you say has been the most influential music genre of modern times?

I would have to say its Rap, people like Dizzee Rascal (not rap, belongs to Grime genre) they have become very popular over recent years and I thinks the reason is, that in a lot of his more popular songs there is hardly any swearing or objectification of women so its become popular with parents and gets played more on the radio.

3. What do you think makes a music video good?

A music video is good when it can express the ideals and emotions that the song is trying to portray like Kiss who have a lot of music videos where its just pure performance, but that’s what they was about, being able to put on when of the biggest and best music shows of all time.

4. How important is music for you?

Music is important to me; it was an important part of my younger years. Music influenced nearly all parts of my life, fashion probably the most, I use to style my hair like famous musicians and even look for the same shirt or jacket that one of them wore in their music videos of Top of the Pops when I was younger.

5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?

What I hate most in a video is when musicians become more then musicians. Instead of just singing songs they have to be in movies, TV programmes and all these other things which have nothing to do with them singing. Its just not necessary and all it does is make them look stupid when they realize that no they cant act and should just stick to singing

Person #3 (Female 20yrs old)

1. What is your most favourite song and why do you believe that it is better than other songs?

I think my most favourite song at the moment would have to be Super Bass by Nicki Minaj. I like it because its like rap in reverse instead of men objectifying women it’s the other way round. Women aren’t seen as objects in her video and I like that because it makes a change from what you usually see in rap videos.

2. What would you say has been the most influential music genre of modern times?

It has got to be Rap. You see its influence everywhere like the clothes people wear, the food they eat and even the way they speak. Because of rap black culture in particular Caribbean has become better known with people incorporating words used in the Caribbean into their vocabulary. Also if you look at a lot of fashion trends with young boys and girls they nearly all the time come from some kind of rapper.

3. What do you think makes a music video good?

To make a good video you need to have the artist in it because at the end of the day it is their song and who better could they get to express what the song is about then the person who made it. For a good video you also need good looking people in it because that’s what attracts a lot of people to the videos of artists, its when they have good looking people in it.

4. How important is music for you?

Music is important to me, I listen to it everyday and there is nowhere that I go without taking my iPod or my phone. I think without music life would be so boring because it one of the only art forms that I really like, I’m not really into paintings or any other kinds of art and I think that music is probably the best in expressing an emotion.

5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?

I hate it when music videos are weird and scary like in Heavy Metal songs where it’s all dark and gruesome, things like that I hate I don’t understand how anyone can listen to it or watch the videos. I especially don’t like bands like Slipknot who all wear weird masks and go around fighting and breaking things like they have something wrong with them.
