Lyrics:
One of the verses that Jackson sings continually begins with the line
Annie are you OK?
So, Annie are you OK?
This means that he is continually concerned about his friend’s welfare. She appears to have been kidnapped, and is in trouble. Michael is searching for her and along the way he comes across some criminals, who get into fights with him. But he is more than a match for them saying
You’ve been hit by a smooth criminal.
Along his search, Jackson also predictably dances with a lot of pretty ladies, and even kisses some of them. At this point his feelings are underlined by the words:
Mouth to Mouth Resus” and “Sounding Heartbeats – Intimidations”
His heart beats faster because of the intense situation, with the ladies all being fascinated by his moves. However, Jackson’s main objective is to make sure Annie is “OK”.
Music Analysis:
The music is upbeat pop, with that “must dance to this” feeling to the beat. There are many instruments used, principally piano, trumpets and violins. The music is very dynamic and contemporary.
Video Analysis:
The video starts with a night-time establishing shot of two young children watching Jackson from a fence across from a nightclub. A green door opens and then Michael Jackson walks alone into a 1930’s style lounge wearing a tailored white suit, with white shoes and hat to match, connoting that h
e may be a slick and stylish business man Although the room appeared to be dark, there is a small amount of natural light coming through the windows and dim low single ceiling lights this may connote that there is possible danger a certain mystery atmosphere. The door slams behind him, the place goes silent. The people in the club all looked at Michael suspiciously, connoting the danger and fear in their eyes. He flicks back the right side of his jacket to expose his right hand trouser pocket, he slowly reaches into that pocket, you see an oriental woman stroking a black cat, and two men whispered to each other, a man concealing a gun under some papers. You hear the sound of the pin being released on a gun, connoting everyone is wary of his intentions. Michael flicks a coin across the room; the coin rotates through the air in slow motion, hearing a whizzing noise as it lands directly in the jukebox slot this shows Michael appears to be very magical and impresses everyone around him leaving them feeling astonished and that he really is this smooth clean cut guy with many tricks. The jukebox lights up, the music starts. A woman nods as if to say “he’s ok” the tension in the room disappears, connoting he’s not a threat. He then starts to dance on his own, whilst others then gather around him. He dances with dynamic precise moves, connoting he is in charge on the dance floor. A woman in red appears in the centre of the room whilst stroking her leg, two men fight for her attention, as they toss her aside they end up punching each other. Michael is engrossed with singing on the microphone, as women whispers in his ear, he look across at the two men fighting and runs across to separate them. With a medium camera shot he pushes them aside as he takes he
r hands and spins her around the room, hugging her body close to his. This makes Michael look like a hero who saved this woman and then after wood can have a romantic dance with her showing that he entices woman at the same time as doing all his criminal actions. In another section of the room you see what appears to be men gambling, as money is being thrown onto the floor which may indicates illegal gambling. A man comes along and picks up the money, Michael with one hand flips the man onto the floor and takes the cash and puts it in his shirt pocket whilst continuing to dance at the same time. The lyrics “you have been hit by a smooth criminal” are said by Michael. This shows that Michael is not just all talk and that he can handle other criminals and leaves them on their backs on the floor showing us that he is not to be messed with.Michael dances over to the snooker table, and in a medium close up shot of the camera, he catches a white ball, spins around, having appeared to have crushed the ball, connoting strength and agility. He gets into a confrontation with a mean looking coloured man, who breaks the snooker cue, connoting that he was preparing himself for any trouble whilst Michael blows some of the white powder into that man’s face, leaving him dazed, Michael runs off, slowly pursued by the dazed man and his gang.
Michael runs up the stairs and engages with a woman in the corner, whilst she steals his wallet without his knowledge, connoting a professional thief. As Michael walks on, he is approached by many thugs who want to fight with him, but it appears the women are protecting him. Behind Michael a thug approaches, holding a shiny knife, connoting that he intends to stab Michael in the bac
k, the surprised look on the women’s faces who were standing in front of Michael, may of indicated to Michael that he was in danger, Michael grabs a gun from his top left jacket pocket, without turning he shoots. The guy is thrown back, flying through the air disappearing in a white cloud, leaving the outline of his body indented in the wall, connoting the power of the gun and lack of fear that Michael has. The stairs descend as Michael steps onto them. He jumps off the stage dramatically and begins to dance dynamically; he opens the scene with his magic moon walk step. The dance chorography was very good because the back-up dancers were doing synchronised steps and there was a lot of lifts. He jumps on to the table, spins quickly and points at the roof, where the window smashes in to tiny pieces of glass falling down in slow motion. The lighting is low, creating silhouettes of shadows moving slowly to the music. A black cat walked onto the piano, it appears that Michael has a lot of power and control of the situation commanding respect from the people at the club; they appear to be under his spell. The tempo of the music speeds up and the light becomes bright again, this connotes that some action is about to take place. The movements are as sharp as from the beginning. A little girl clutching a teddy bear pokes her head through the door and smiles at Michael, possibly indicating that they might know each other. Michael leans forward effortlessly, like a statue, holding that pose for a few seconds. A child watches Michael’s elaborate dance moves from a top window outside the club then he climbs down to the street and begins to copy Michael’s moves as if he was Michael himself, my opinion would be that Michael steps have been seen by the boy before and he is familiar with the moves.
There is a cut back into the club where we see a medium long shot of Michael and the dancers starting a new routine, and as the backup dancers join Michael they walk over to hi
m in a zombie like manner as if they are under his command. There is a spotlight that beams down over Michaels head so we know he is the main character and most important person. The music is now coming to an end, we can tell this by the fact that the tempo of the music is slowing right down. Next we hear loud stomping of feet which sounds like soldiers marching gradually increasing. We see the silhouette of several people carrying heavy fire arms connoting a battle is about to occur. Through the bars of the front doors we see a close up shot of a hand with a black glove covers the mouth of the little girl then takes her away. All of the people that are in the club suddenly circle Michael as if to protect him, then all the protectors crouch down and Michael fires a machine gun at all the silhouettes above in a circular motion. The people help him escape through the green door; the door is bolted behind him by an oriental lady. You see a high angle shot of Michael’s back down the dark alley, this shows that the people in the club respected Michael, became his friends and helped him escape safely.Audience Readings:
The preferred reading of this music video is that it is a brilliant track with dynamic dance moves, and amazing actors. Michael Jackson is a smooth criminal, set in the 1930’s.This was the time of the great depression in America which led to poverty. People were on a low income, and found it hard to survive, leading to some people getting involved in underground and illegal activities. This increased the number of gangsters and mafia on the streets. This music video was another super hit for Michael Jackson.
The oppositional reading of this music video is that, it is the same old style of dance video that Michael Jackson has produced before; it is becoming repetitive and predictable.
My opinion is that this is one of the best music videos in terms of dance choreography that Michael Jackson has produced. I particularly liked the magnificent moon walk and the spectacular lean. The storyline and acting in the video is amazing, the music makes you want to dance whenever you hear it.
Subject Matter
This artist’s real name is Stephen Paul Manderson he was born in Hackney London; on the 27th November 1983.He is an English rapper and has worked with artist such as Lilly Allen in her 2009 concert tour. He was signed to The Beat (2006-2008) run by Mike Skinner and Ted Mayhem but this record label soon went under and he then joined up with Virgin Records (2009-to date). The person who had the most influence in his life was his grandmother Pat, as she raised him from the age of one. His maternal mother had him at 16years old and his father was in and out of his life but committed suicide when Professor Green was around 18years old. He had to identify his father’s body in the morgue .This must of been a very traumatic experience for him at such a young age. He became a rapper by accident; he attended a friend’s party where people were free-styling. He was put on the spot and was called over to rap and that’s how his career began. The Original Lyrics of Professor Green Jungle song:
PROFESSOR GREEN LYRICS:
"JUNGLE"
(feat Maverack Sabre)
I see no point in living life that right, so I just take what I can find.
I see no point in living life that right, when your out here in this jungle.
It's wild round 'ere, you don't wanna spend a night round 'ere.
When your out here in this jungle, aint nothing nice round 'ere, troubles what you find round 'ere.
When your out here in this jungle, in this jungle.
Your always caught in this struggle, in this jungle .
But you keep asking for trouble, you love? You love when trouble comes your way, your way, your way.
Welcome to Hackney, a place where I think somebody's been playing Jumanji.
A Manor where man are like animals, an' they'll yam on you like they yam on food.
Cats with claws that'll stab a yout', act bad an' catch a slap or two.
We don't applaud success, all we clap are tools.
London aint cool to cruise through where the hunters pray, Looking lunch today, and your chains looking like fresh fruit to a hungry ape.
They'll eat on you, then laugh about it like Hyenas do, so stick to breezing through, like cheeta's do or be a piece of food.
[Chorus:]
When your out here in this jungle.
[Verse 2:]
It's blitz admist the strife here, got kids with sticks and knifes here.
It's hype here, we know no different prick; it's just life here, life the way we know from young the way we're shown.
Stacked trapped in flats where our front doors don't face the road.
God CID spinning round in cars, shifting criminals at large, it's hard, not to think the bits are just a bing without the bars.
Jealousy's what the cheddar brings, for the cheddar it's anything goes, low enough to rob newly weds for their wedding rings
Everyday is warring, never give a warning, violence is the only way you settle things, everyday is hating, money that I'm making, jealous 'cause I'm moving on to better things, everyday is fighting, rolling in the night now. All you do is watch everyone else get far, you say that life is hard..
[Chorus:]
When your out here in this jungle.
Conclusion:
The lyrics of this song are based upon what Professor Green viewed Hackney to be like. As this is where he grew up, he has a very good understanding of what is really happening there. He relates to hackney as being a jungle. Professor Green portrays hackney to be a very u
nsafe and violent area. There are a lot of gangs in hackney which he personifies to being like packs of animals ‘’ A Manor where man are like animals’’ He also compares hackney to be like the game jumanji ‘with cats with claws that will stab a yout’, by this he referring the cats to people that are eager for drugs and stab a yout means to stab a young person. The word food in the lyrics refers to drugs, and the people of Hackney will defend their territory like lions in a jungle. That’s why the word jungle is mentioned many times.Professor Green is saying that it is very easy to tell if you are not from Hackney, by the way you dress, speak and carry yourself, he suggests that if you have no business in Hackney then it’s not a place to spend the night. Many disputes are settled not by talking, but by using their fists, guns or knives, in these areas actions speak louder than words. This is the way of life in Hackney for those born there. The police are always patrolling around Hackney trying to catch muggers, thieves and drug dealers.
It is likely that most of the criminals end up behind bars, even if you were once an honest person the atmosphere and the surroundings can have a negative effect on you, and you end up becoming part of that jungle.
Representation
In some music videos there can be scenes which can create the notion of erotic pleasure, according to the theory of Sigmund Freud, where women are looked at as sexual objects rather than for narrative purposes. Goodwin argues that there is a combination of camera work and editing that intensifies the body shots in music videos. Goodwin also says it becomes more complex when you see the male body on display as women then have the power to look at men as sexual objects too. Some people think that the display of the female body increases the male profit margins in music videos.
Star Image and Power
Richard Dyer had noted that “A star is an image constructed from a range of material”
Richard Dyers material included a range of different things. The first material is the song, as they should be lyrical themes and musical structures/genres. I think a song can tell a story about the writer or different issues which are interoperated individually. The second material is the record covers which are singles, albums and images of the star they present. Some famous artist use record covers to sell their music e.g. Michael Jackson. The third material is media coverage which gives you an insight into someone’s private life, making you curious about how the star become artist he/she is. The fourth material is the live performance- the images of the stage show, enabling you to see the full extent of someone’s abilities under pressure. Some artist will thrive under the pressure whilst some break down.
The star image is all about how the audience perceive them to be in the music industry, involving their character. The music promo is playing an important role in constructing a star image; this is creating an associated iconography. An iconography is the visual features of the star such as costume and jewellery or setting. The economic powers of the stars are generated through sales of products such as CD sales, downloads and cinema tickets. Stars get a lot of money from advertisements. A stars image can also be analysed from the type of music video collection they have.
Conclusion
The stars image has a lot of factors that make them in to professional performer. They can be under tremendous pressure when they are performing live, from this they can generate music videos, downloads and CD’s as there is a wide audience that they appeal to.
Forms and Conventions
Genre conventions:
A music video is a great way of promoting the artist and there music, but it is also a form of entertainment for the public. As a group we decided to look at music videos from YouTube to get ideas and inspiration for our own music video. We looked at a range of different types of music videos in class.
Genre style:
There are different types of music video. Not all music channels have a particular style. If you watch these music channels over a period of time you will be able to identify with the characters in the different genre. Music video’s have mise-en-scene, teams, performance, camera and editing styles.
Camera Work:

The camera normally follows the performer which makes the audience feel that they are watching a live performance or make them feel like they are there with the performer. There are a lot of close ups and the lighting is used to focus on the stars face. Record labels will demand the need for lots of close ups of the artist.
Sound Track:
Normally in music videos the lyrics are on the sound track, in the opening and closing sequence. The back ground music is on the sound track. And this can be diagetic sound and non diagetic sound. The lyrics and visuals have to be in perfect sink with each other for the music video to work. The lyrics and visuals illustrate what’s going on in the video.
Editting:

Normally the editing is fast cut as they have to fit everything in a small amount of time. Some videos have a slower pace and the transitions between two scenes are smooth. Some of the music video used special effects like CGI which they use in blockbuster movies
The mise-en-scene varies between the different genres of music videos. The more famous the stars can afford to have the dances, customs, make up, props and different locations. Different music styles have different atmospheres. The clothes and makeup of the artist are also a lot different.
Intertextuality:
Intertextuality can be the music and lyrics that are mixed together to create more meaning in a music video. In some music video’s they can show products which are aimed to the audience to buy for example they could wear pacific brand of clothes. It is like advertising in a music video, the artist can also make money from this and the brand will make money from the audience from the audience buy their products.
Style of Presentation:
There are three styles of presentation in music videos, which are performance, narrative or concept. When there is narrative in a music video like there is in poems, it is not often complete and sometimes fragmentary. In most performances in music videos the dances will be choreographed. These videos can be cut between narrative and performance. Sometimes the artist will be a big part in the story with an acting role or can even be the narrator himself. Quit often in live band performances they will show different instruments being played to really give you the live feeling.

Interview Questions 2
1. What is your most favourite song and why do you believe that it is better than other songs?
My favourite song is Thriller by Michael Jackson. It is the songs I enjoy listening to all the time and it never gets boring for me. I think it’s the better song because of the theme and the storyline, not to mention the scary zombie faces used as well. I very much like the beat and the dancing as well.
2. What would you say has been the most influential genre at modern times?
I think there are all good influences in the music industry; there isn’t a specific genre that stands out as being “special”. I always say that all genre’s have a good side and a bad side to them.
3. What do you think makes a music video look good?
The editing is what I look out for in a music video, I want to see various techniques that are used in technology that make the video stand out more and makes me think about it as well. I also think the performance of the artist in the video is always good to look out for too.
4. How important is music for you?
It isn’t life dependant for me. I always listen to music when I am bored or working so it keeps me occupied. I also watch some videos on TV whilst waiting for the adverts on my main show to finish.
5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?
I hate seeing artists singing with auto tuned being used on their voice. It highlights their mediocrity and also blocking the people that may have potential in the music industry. It’s not right placing people that can’t sing in a video, there are a lot of people with strong voices that deserve a chance to sing professionally.
Interview Questions
My favourite song is Fireworks by Katy Perry. What I like about this video is the singer encouraging the people to make the world a better place. It is about making people stand up for their selves and realise the wrongs they are doing in life. I think it’s one of the best songs out there as it’s unique and the artist clearly has a good heart by trying to make the world more peaceful.
2. What would you say has been the most influential genre at modern times?
It has to be rap in my opinion, the lyrics some of the artists give are correct in so many ways with regard to the subject. For decades rap has always been the genre that artists use to express their views about politics, crime, and love etc.
3. What do you think makes a music video look good?
Having attractive women along with the artist is always an eye catcher, but the lyrics and the editing is always the one to look out for. I wouldn’t want to see a video that is all over the place, I want it to look more prepared and easier to understand.
4. How important is music for you?
I listen to music when I am bored and try to find something useful to do with my time. I sometimes listen to music on the way to work so it keeps me occupied. Other times I listen to music when I do my work on the laptop.
5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?
I hate seeing the artist degrading themselves by virtually showing off all their bits just to get all the viewers in. I always say be true to yourself and don’t show off all your body parts because it is seen as “slutty” and attention seeking.
Subject Matter
For our music project, we have to choose a song that will be used in our video to reflect on the storyline. The group had started to discuss what types of genre and artist would be good to work on in order to create a very good storyline that is unique and effective. We had decided to choose the “Dubstep” genre and the song chosen is “Jungle” by urban artist Professor Green. Dubstep is a very modern genre, and although it dated back to 1998, it’s become more public and aware over the last few years. It is basically a remix of various different songs, where certain beats are added in to make a tune that goes with the song. It is a genre of electric dance music and it had originated from south London. BBC Radio 1 had started playing Dubstep videos in 2003 as a form of support and from then on it has become a recent thing for many music stations that usually play it at weekends during night time as it can go with the partying effect when people listen and dance to it. Following on from this, during the years 2005 and 2006 the Dubstep scene was becoming more popular among music fans and magazines had started to back it in becoming a success in the music industry. It became popular among music sites and it had been one of the most downloaded out of all music genres. The tempo of Dubstep is nearly always in the range of 138-142 beats per minute, with a clap or snare usually inserted every third beat in a bar.
The song is by rising urban artist Professor Green who was born in Hackney, East London. It talks about life in Hackney, and how it’s seen as a “jungle” which is the name of the song. It talks about how Hackney is a place that people should not trespass due to the troubling violence that occurs mostly around the council estates daily. It discusses lives of youths, mostly teenagers that make the place feel unwanted. It’s seen as a territory that must not be crossed, and it talks about street racing, prostitution, violence and heavy drug/alcohol use. A lyric in the song says “its blitz amidst the strife here, got kids with sticks and knifes here.” This talks about how kids start becoming violent, possessing weapons and getting into fights at such a young age which reflects on their childhood. The video sees many hooded youth’s in balaclava’s attempting to break into houses, with blood trickling down their faces. This shows how life in certain parts of London is very hard to live in.
Professor Green is signed to Virgin Records. He rose to the music scene by winning a rap battle tournament in 2008, winning £50,000 in the process. He’s been very successful on the urban scene, being nominated for many awards and also winning some as well. He claims he entered the rap scene “accidentally” when he was put on the spot to rap at his friend’s party, and from then on he said it worked for him. He’s on the way to releasing two albums, one that came out last year and one that is due out later this year.

Professional Job Roles

Professional Job Roles
In order to create a music video it requires a range of people that each can offer their own specific expertise. The collection of people required to create a music video are divided into different crews. There is the Production crew, Hair and Makeup crew, Wardrobe department crew, Camera crew, sound crew, chorographers, light men and a special effects crew. However for my group’s music video production we will only use a Producer, Director, Cameraperson and Editor.
Producer: A music producer is at the top in the chain of command they have final say over everything a
and have the power to change anything they wish. Their main role is to coordinate the whole project making sure everyone is doing their jobs to the specifications laid out by the producer; they also are in charge of finding funds for the project, finding people to invest into the music video. The Producer also hires the key personnel, and arranges the music video for distributors. The producer is involved throughout all phases of the music video making process from development to completion of a project, as they are the main decision makers.
Job Description
- Development - Producers make sure the script is to their liking and overlook any critical changes and ideas proposed by the Director. Producers also choose the film crew. They also
work out the financial costs and budget according to the cost they are willing to spend overall.
- Pre-production – During pre-production producers bring together the key members of the creative team so they can make final changes with the Director. Once everything is in place the producer will also choose the Heads of Departments, allocating the best people to head each department.
- Production - Producers are responsible to make sure that everyone is putting in the standard of work required and that they are keeping within budget and on schedule. They monitor the Director to make sure they are providing the results that they are looking for.
Skills
- Producers must be stern and confident and have good communication skills in order to tell the director of other members of the crew to change how they are working or criticize any work they do.
- They have to be creative side in order to suggest any possible improvements on the aspects of the video.
- Be able to deal with difficult situations and conflicts as there is bound to be many oppositional ideas as to what should be done in the music video.
- They need to have confidence in their music video in that it will be successful because otherwise if they don’t believe it to be good it can have negative effects on other crew members.
- They need to understand what they may need to produce a music video as well as how much it would cost in order to get the best prices they can and also keep to the budget.
Director: The director is responsible for overseeing the creative aspects of a music video; this includes controlling the content and flow of the music video, for example deciding on the story if there is one on a music video, deciding on which dance to use and deciding how the artist if they are in the video will look. They also decide the locations in which the film will be shot and are seen as second in the chain of command, only answering to the Producer. The Director controls how the video is made, deciding on the positions of the camera, lighting and so

funds. Directors may come from a range of different backgrounds (e.g. production, camera, editing) but most importantly they will have substantial experience in the industry.
Job Description
The job of a music video Director tends to start at the beginning of the
process as they are the key creative thinkers, they must be able to visualize ideas as to what the video will be like and even how they shots would look like. They then take their initial idea and with the help of other writers they craft it into a final idea.
During pre-production the Director has to decide on how they envision the artist to be portrayed and they must produce an idea that will satisfy both the Producer and the artist. They have to be able to analyse the song in depth and decide how they will represent the lyrics, often using symbolism to help express emotions, and picking the right locations for the video, which the producers look at to ensure they are happy with the decisions.
They then direct rehearsals once the music video is in production and make any changes if they think they are necessary such as a change in the position of the people in the video or anything else they wish as long as they get the consent of the Producer. Directors also manage the technical aspects of filming, including the camera, sound, lighting, design and special effects departments. The
Directors also work in post- production working closely with Editors to reach the to create the best result they can and decide on what effects if any should be incorporated into the final finished music video.
Skills
- Directors need to be strong willed so that they can get the crew to produce the results that the Director had envisioned, as well as being able to not give in too much to the Producers changes.
- Directors must also take into account the budget that they are working with and the results the Producer is expecting.
- Need to be creative and adaptable so that they can change any of their ideas to suit the needs of the Producer and change any ideas of something prevents their original idea from not happening.
- Be flexible and willing to change if someone offers good advice in order to produce an original and engaging music video.
- Must have good communication skills in order to give clear instructions and get their idea across as easy as possible.
- Be able to make decisions and evaluate them to see any potential risks that all the departments might bear to try and overcome them.
- Need to have an understanding of the music industry and all aspects of making a music video so that they c
an fully control what happens in making the video. - They must also be patient as they may fail in what they are trying to do a few times.
Camera Person: The camera operator uses the camera at the direction of the director. Following their directions as to what they want shot.
Job Description
The cameraperson starts working during the production stage of the music video, they get told by the director their idea for what they want to be shot and they work closely with them reshooting anything the director wants different of shooting new shots the director has thought of. The Cameraperson and director decide where to position the camera to produce the shots that they want. During shooting, they are responsible for all aspects of camera operation, to make the director’s job easier. Target Audience Interview
Person #1 (Male 18yrs old)
1. What is your most favourite song and why do you believe that it is better than other songs?
My favourite song without a shadow of a doubt will have to be heal the world by Michael Jackson. He just captivated the whole world by this song as he when he sang this song. I can name a million other songs that I love about Michael but this one is just amazing. He sang it live
once and it was so deep. A child sang first and then he came on and everybody went crazy (SIGH). I think that this is better than other songs because Michael tries to reach out to the world instead of just singing the song and lastly his voice is just, I don’t know how to describe it. Just amazing. My favourite song without a shadow of a doubt will have to be heal the world by Michael Jackson.
2. What would you say has been the most influential music genre of modern times?
The most influential music genre today would be without a shadow of a doubt R&B. The majority of teenagers listen to R&B. In fact it has captivated the majority of the world due to artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Jay-Z and many more. A lot of people try to learn the songs because it is catchy and easy to follow. But in my opinion I think that music is not what it used to be.
3. What do you think makes a music video good?
This is a tough question since there are many things that could make a music video look good. It depends really because if it is a famous artist like Jay-Z, the image that he gives out to the audience alone will allow people the like the video. However if it is a new artist that is just rising, the music video itself will have to be great for people to recognize them. So it really depends. Am not too sure on that one myself but if I had to say, I think it’s the image of artists and the type of genre they are working with.
4. How important is music for you?
Music is very important. I really don’t know what I would do without music. I listen to music almost every day, whether it is going to college or going shopping or whatever, I will have to have music in my ears otherwise I would just be grumpy LMFAO. If I don’t listen to my Michael Jackson then am going to be a very angry person.
5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?
Music is just not original anymore and that is one thing I really hate. Before it used to be original and artists would come up with their own beats for their music and use their own lyrics. Now artists are just copying lyrics from other songs and try and differentiate it like nobody would notice. For instance Jason Derulo, “Daylight come and we don’t want to go home” I mean come on that song should have been left as it is.
Person #2 (Male 45yrs old)
1. What is your most favourite song and why do you believe that it is better than other songs?
The best song I have ever heard and the song that I always play at home is stand by me by Ben E King. What a song. When I first heard the song, I immediately fell in love with it and since then that song has never grown too old for me. I believe that it is the best song of all time because it is a song that you can actually dance to. Nowadays there is just music that you just cannot dance to. This generation needs to know what real music is about.
2. What would you say has been the most influential music genre of modern times?
I would have to say its Rap. These days you see little kids walking on the road with their phones out listening to music without any headphones, which I think is ridiculous and just rapping to instrumentals. Rap has definitely taken over the youths of today.
3. What do you think makes a music video good?
A good music video is when the audience feels emotions or it influences a person in some ways even if the influence is bad. Once that happens then a lot of people would be talking about that specific music video and this would make the artists more established.
4. How important is music for you?
Music is very important for me as it should be important for everyone else. I know I might sound like a little boy but I cannot leave my house without my IPod. When I was younger I used to watch top of the pops and see my some of my favourite artists sing. I miss those days.
5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?
What I hate about music now is that really and truly anybody could try and make music and you would see it on music channels like for instance Channel U is what I think it is. I walk through the living-room and I see my son glued to the TV watching youths no bigger than him rapping and it’s like that’s not music. The lyrics they even come up with are appalling.
Person #3 (Female 20yrs old)
1. What is your most favourite song and why do you believe that it is better than other songs?
My favourite song will have to be best thing I never had by Beyoncé. She is an artist that a lot of people adore and young girls would want to grow up being like her. Beyoncé sing that song with passion and it just moves me. It’s by far for me better than any other song because even though men might think she’s a bit sexiest she defends woman and it just cheers women up to think that we can be dominant.
2. What would you say has been the most influential music genre of modern times?
Rap without any hesitation. You can just look around and you can see how the genre has influenced people. The way people talk and dress. A lot of people just love that genre but I really don’t know why. I think it’s the image of rappers nowadays that allow the target audience to think wow I want to be like them.
3. What do you think makes a music video good?
I think for a music video to be good you would have to have attractive artists. For example, there are a lot of young boys and also men that love Beyoncé not only because she can sing and dance but because she is a very beautiful lady. Attractive men are a must. Artists like Drake are so attractive and this helps him to attract more female audiences.
4. How important is music for you?
Music is important to me; I listen to it every day I cannot leave my house without taking my IPod or my phone. That is a must. If I forget it, I would literally turn back to go and collected my IPod. Music really cheers me up and it gets me in a bubbly mood. Without music I think life would be so boring. Music makes everybody feel happy and when I see a happy face then that also make me happy.
5. What do you hate in songs and music videos?
I really hate grime. To be honest that genre should not have been existed in the first place. I don’t see how people can listen to grime and think it sounds good. There is no actual kind of rhythm to it. Well there is but really anybody in this world could do it. It is like speaking through a beat but very fast. That is not music in my opinion but hey everybody has their own opinions.
SUBJECT MATTER
For this unit we will be producing a dub step styled music video. Dub step is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in south London, England. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overpowering bass lines and reverberant drum patte
rns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals due to the fact that the genre is mainly known for its lack of vocals and high base. The earliest dub step releases date back to 1998 and were darker, more experimental, instrumental dub remixes of 2-step garage. However Dub step became an uprisinggenre in the year 2001 as it was originated by DJ’s mixing electronic music with grime. In the year 2003 the popularity of the genre grew substantially and was on air on BBC1 radio. The genre was receiving extensive coverage and was featured in music magazines such as the Wire and online publications such as Pitchfork media which allowed the population of dub step to grow even higher. The reputation of dub step has grown considerably over the years and in 2005 the genre brought grime DJs to the fore of the lineup. Building on the success of Skream's grimey anthem "Midnight Request Line," the hype around the DMZ night and support from online forums (notably dubstepforum.com)and media, the scene gained prominence after former Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs gathered top figures from the scene for one show, entitled "Dub step Warz. The show created a new global audience for the scene, after years of exclusively UK underground buzz. Dub step has continued to nurture and today many new and popular songs are remixed into Dub step similar to the song that our group has chosen to use for our music video. The song that our group chose to create the music video is created by Professor Green called "In the jungle". Professor Green (Stephen Paul Manderson) was born 27 November 1983 and made his debut in 2006 by making a mix tape called "Lecture#1". After his first record label, The Beats went under he produced on his own an EP called The Green EP. Professor Green went on tours with the artist Lilly Allen and this allowed him to become more established and known with the public. Soon after he was signed to Virgin Records and created song with Lily Allen. In 2010 Professor Green released his first album called "Alive till I'm Dead" which featured guest vocals from Lilly Allen, Emeli Sandé, Fink, Labrinth which helped him
to get more established in the music industry.Professor Green was brought up Hackney East London and was raised by his Grandmother. He lived tough up bringing as he was abandoned by his mother and also lost his father. This influenced him to create music that would have his past experiences in Hackney which eventually developed into the genre Rap. His target audience is mainly aimed for teenagers since most of his music has to do with the dangers of streets. Green was physically attacked in a night club on 23 May 2009 in Shoreditch which caused him to stay in hospital for several days. The attack allowed him to gain more popularity as now he is talked about as one of the few artist who has survived a fatal incident along with artists such as Sean Kingston. The song that our group has chosen is the dub step version of his original video "In the jungle". The dub step version has similarities to the original video however you can hear the distinctive differences between them. We though as a group that the song is very good as it has no video and it brought a lot of ideas for each of us to share amongst each other. In our song only the chorus of the song is been mentioned. The Dub step version of the original song follows the key codes and conventions of the genre in which it has a two-step beat and also it has hardly any vocals. The song is mainly about how rough and dangerous the area Hackney is. In the original video we see acts of violence and weapons. Professor Green as compared the streets of Hackney to the jungle due to the fact that it is wild "Its wild round ere, you don't wanna spend the night round ere, when your out here in this jungle". This connotes that the the people in hackney at night are ruthless and crazy. He uses a lot of metaphors to describe the lifestyle that he has in Hackney.
Usually most rappers in their music videos would like to have luxarious items such as cars, big mansions, chains etc such as 50 cent and Snoop Dog. However he uses the realism of the world f
or example flats and gang members. For our music videowe thought that it would be good to follow that type of convention for example an establishing shot of a bar. As a group we thought it would be a good idea if the main cast should wear urban clothing etc. hoodies, tracksuits or era hats. We also thought that filming our first scene in a deprived or depressed area would be ideal, places such as whitechapels or soho.

Subject Matter
By 2003 Dubstep had gained so much popularity that it was beginning to be aired on BBC 1 radio and featured in many music magazines such as The Wire and it became one of the fastest growing music genres of the time. The influence of Dubstep has significantly grew over the past few years as in 2007 when Brittney spears used Dubstep in her song
‘Freak show’. Dubstep has continued to grow and many new and popular songs are remixed into a Dubstep version, like the song that my group will make a video for.The song in which I will be making a video for is a Dubstep remix of the popular song ‘In the Jungle’ by the rapper Professor Green. Professor Green real name (Stephen Paul Manderson) made his debut in 2006 with his first mix tape called ‘Lecture 1’. He also toured regularly with the artist Lily Allen that helped to establish his own fans and make himself known with a bigger audience.
In 2010 Professor Green released his first album ‘Alive till I’m Dead’ with guests such as Lily Allen, Example and Labrinth, all well established artists which helped to promote Professor Green as his album could now of been bought by anyone who was also a fan of any of the artists featuring on his album.
Professor Green was born in Hackney East London in a deprived area where he had a troubled up bringing, with the death of his father and being abandoned by his mother. In a lot of his songs he uses his past experience of living in Hackney to give an insight into what life was like there, a convention of most Rap. On May 23rd he was attacked and stabbed outside a nightclub in Shoreditch, which resulted in him suffering a near fatal wound. This incident vastly increased his popular as he was now at the center of the media attention and gave him the same reputation as many other Rappers who were involved in violent attacks like 50 Cent.
The song we have chosen to make a video for, the Dubstep remix of the song ‘In the Jungle’ has a video for its original song however we believed as a group that the Dubstep version was a better choice for us to use as there was no video and because it was also Dubstep it would appeal to both fans of Professor Green and Dubstep. The Dubstep version of the song follows the conventions of Dubstep in that it has a two step beat and that it has very little vocals, and in our song only the chorus of the song is used. The original song is about the troubles living in Hackney, the violence and general crime. Professor Green Raps about the similarities between living in Hackney compared to the jungle “ A Manor where man are like animals, an' they'll yam on you like they yam on food.” These metaphors help to describe his experiences to people who do not know of the culture and life in Hackney, giving insight into his life and also being able to relate to some of his audience with their lives.
As a Rapper Professor Green does not follow the usual convention of hoodies,
lots of jewelry or other luxury things like cars. In his video he tends to wear casual street clothes, which in a way helps to make him relatable, rather then other rappers such as Snoop Dog and 50 Cent who always rap about the money they have and what they can get with it. However for the video for my song I believe that the actors will need to wear urban attire, with things such as hoodies and snapback hats. I also believe that the music video should be set in an urban area preferably a run down area with lots of alleyways, places such as Soho, Whitechapel and Aldgate.
