For our music project, we have to choose a song that will be used in our video to reflect on the storyline. The group had started to discuss what types of genre and artist would be good to work on in order to create a very good storyline that is unique and effective. We had decided to choose the “Dubstep” genre and the song chosen is “Jungle” by urban artist Professor Green. Dubstep is a very modern genre, and although it dated back to 1998, it’s become more public and aware over the last few years. It is basically a remix of various different songs, where certain beats are added in to make a tune that goes with the song. It is a genre of electric dance music and it had originated from south London. BBC Radio 1 had started playing Dubstep videos in 2003 as a form of support and from then on it has become a recent thing for many music stations that usually play it at weekends during night time as it can go with the partying effect when people listen and dance to it. Following on from this, during the years 2005 and 2006 the Dubstep scene was becoming more popular among music fans and magazines had started to back it in becoming a success in the music industry. It became popular among music sites and it had been one of the most downloaded out of all music genres. The tempo of Dubstep is nearly always in the range of 138-142 beats per minute, with a clap or snare usually inserted every third beat in a bar.

The song is by rising urban artist Professor Green who was born in Hackney, East London. It talks about life in Hackney, and how it’s seen as a “jungle” which is the name of the song. It talks about how Hackney is a place that people should not trespass due to the troubling violence that occurs mostly around the council estates daily. It discusses lives of youths, mostly teenagers that make the place feel unwanted. It’s seen as a territory that must not be crossed, and it talks about street racing, prostitution, violence and heavy drug/alcohol use. A lyric in the song says “its blitz amidst the strife here, got kids with sticks and knifes here.” This talks about how kids start becoming violent, possessing weapons and getting into fights at such a young age which reflects on their childhood. The video sees many hooded youth’s in balaclava’s attempting to break into houses, with blood trickling down their faces. This shows how life in certain parts of London is very hard to live in.

Professor Green is signed to Virgin Records. He rose to the music scene by winning a rap battle tournament in 2008, winning £50,000 in the process. He’s been very successful on the urban scene, being nominated for many awards and also winning some as well. He claims he entered the rap scene “accidentally” when he was put on the spot to rap at his friend’s party, and from then on he said it worked for him. He’s on the way to releasing two albums, one that came out last year and one that is due out later this year.
