Inner sleeve back design

This is the back design of the inner sleeve. The back contains a short paragraph on Professor Green's personal life and how he rose to fame. The banner is also at the top just like on the front design in order to maintain consistency and house style. The text is also the same font size as the front design and it's in the same colour as well.

Music Video

Inner sleeve design front cover

This is the inner sleeve front cover for the music video. It shows the lyrics to the artist's song and it reveals different themes that will be shown throughout the video. The title of the song is also shown in a big font at the top of the design, and it's in a green font so we keep the whole design with the digipak and the magazine advert as a consistent house style layout. The lyrics are in green as well and the font size is enough for anyone to read.

Q1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We have chosen to make a dub step music video .The artist, Professor Green has performed the song “Jungle” . The  dubstep video  that we have made, is a mixture of performance and narrative based format  especially  when you compare our music video with Planet Cybatron Dubstep by DMT productions, a concept based video. We challenge the conventions  of a  dubstep music video, as our video is both performance based with a clear non-linear narrative.

Below you can compare both videos

In our dub step video we have a lot of drum and bass which is one of the forms and conventions of dub step music videos. Normally dub step videos are very loud and have drum and bass which normal appeal to young adults ranging between the ages of 15-25.

Our dub step music video comprised of jungle lyrics  which is why we felt that the urban scene i.e streets of london made a good location. What happens in urban locations is normally characterised in dub step video for example they show the life on the streets, were drugs and gangs congregate. E.g. the riots in London 2011

Professor Green genre is more rap and grime and he is the performer of the song jungle. Dub step is a fairly new type of music and it’s not a popular type of music like pop, rap, hip hop and rnb.

Q2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary text?
Our music video location was an urban setting; the characters in the video were young hoddies in London. We tried to incorporate different part of the music video with the digipak and magazine advert.

There are some digipaks covers that are bright and colourful as their theme of music is happy, normally light hearted and listened to by all ages.

However our digipak has a dark colour which makes it look more sinister. The theme of our music has a serious story line and our video is explicit and is listen to by certain ages as it not be suitable for young children.
The text on the front of my digipak was called Professor Green the style of text was graffiti to make it more street, jungle and dangerous. We choose the colour green because his name was Green, it stood out a lot more in the dark back ground.
We had a street sign of Soho square to show some parts of the location of the music video. We wrote in the jungle because it was part of the music theme, there is also pool table which also ties into the music video. The significance of the black ball on the digipak cover is that when the black ball is potted life for the main singer is over.

The background is a popular area in central London, Soho. There is a block of flats on the back cover and the writing flows in a slanted position, which appears to be like steps.
The magazine advert was designed by our group and the ideas were obtained by researching other magazine adverts regarding music videos. We had to include good reviews from the songs that artist has done. We included where to buy the video, which can be from such places as HMV and ITunes. This format is similar to other digipaks. The website of the artist is included in the magazine and images to give some information about the music video.

Q3 What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
Before we produce our dub step video we carried out a research questionnaire and from the feedback we got different ideas about music videos. 55% of our target audience were male and 45% were female.
91% of our target audience like simple music and 9% prefer complicated music. 91% of people preferred a story line with a music video and 9% did not. From this information I learnt that a story line would be good to have a story line in it.
Most of the people surveyed in our questionnaire thought that the music video fits the genre; this music would mostly be appealing to people between the ages of 11-16 and they would spend in the region of £5.00/£10.00 for the digipak. The audience liked the front cover of our digipak as goes into detail letting you know what the video is about.
10 people out of 15 liked our digipak but 5 people did not like it. 12 out of 15 liked our music video but 3 people did not. I learnt that most of the people like out music video and digipak. There was positive feedback from most of our audience.
Some people felt angry with the gang culture in London, as the person stabbed was trying to protect his friend. This a familiar pattern for many people living in London.
Q4 How did you use media technologies in the research, planning, construction and evaluation stages?
I used the internet search engine Google to search about the music genre of dub step like Professor Green. We used Google maps to find different locations around London for filming. We uploaded the video into YouTube so we could embed the video into our blog.
We had to email work to each other which was very handy because you can send any work anywhere also as long as they have access to the internet.
We used the internet to look at other digipak to give us ideas for our own digipak design; we used different images from Google images to add in our digipak. We used the same search engine to find images for our music video.
The digital camera we used is called cannon XM2 which had automatic focusing. This camera was very useful for taking videos around London and there was a tri pod with it, which helped us get all of the camera shot we needed.

The blog was useful as we could hand in work wherever we were and could improve on work when necessary. One of the editing affects we used was making  the singer look like a ghost and miming the words to professor Green’s lyrics and fading him in/out.
In Photoshop I used it to create some of the images for my digipak .One of the advantages of Photoshop is that each layer can be created without deleting other work I incorporated Professor Greens face onto the inside sleeve of the digipak.

Digipak Magazine Advert Final

This is the Digipak Magazine Advert, I created this using the techniques that i have analysed from other magazine advertisements such as a close up of the artists face, the inclusion of where to buy the digipak as well as good reviews of the song. And also the inclusion of elements that relate to the video. From the second draft I improved it by including aspects of the music video in it, which helped to give the advert more impact and also give more information on the music video itself as well as changing the photo in order to make it more different from the cover of the Digipak.

Subject Matter

Stage Name: Professor Green

This artist’s real name is Stephen Paul Manderson he was born in Hackney London; on the 27th November 1983.He is an English rapper and has worked with artist such as Lilly Allen in her 2009 concert tour. He was signed to The Beat (2006-2008) run by Mike Skinner and Ted Mayhem but this record label soon went under and he then joined up with Virgin Records (2009-to date). The person who had the most influence in his life was his grandmother Pat, as she raised him from the age of one. His maternal mother had him at 16years old and his father was in and out of his life but committed suicide when Professor Green was around 18years old. He had to identify his father’s body in the morgue .This must of been a very traumatic experience for him at such a young age.
He became a rapper by accident; he attended a friend’s party where people were free-styling. He was put on the spot and was called over to rap and that’s how his career began.

12The particular song that I have researched is Professor Green Jungle dub step
The Original Lyrics of Professor Green Jungle song

PROFESSOR GREEN LYRICS

"Jungle"
(feat. Maverick Sabre)
I see no point in living life that right, so I just take what I can find.
I see no point in living life that right, when your out here in this jungle.
It's wild round 'ere, you don't wanna spend a night round 'ere.
When your out here in this jungle, aint nothing nice round 'ere, troubles what you find round 'ere.
When your out here in this jungle, in this jungle.
Your always caught in this struggle, in this jungle .
But you keep asking for trouble, you love? You love when trouble comes your way, your way, your way.

[Verse 1:]
Welcome to Hackney, a place where I think somebody's been playing Jumanji.
A Manor where man are like animals, an' they'll yam on you like they yam on food.
Cats with claws that'll stab a yout', act bad an' catch a slap or two.
We don't applaud success, all we clap are tools.
London aint cool to cruise through where the hunters pray, Looking lunch today, and your chains looking like fresh fruit to a hungry ape.
They'll eat on you, then laugh about it like Hyenas do, so stick to breezing through, like cheeta's do or be a piece of food.

[Chorus:]
When your out here in this jungle.

[Verse 2:]
It's blitz admist the strife here, got kids with sticks and knifes here.
It's hype here, we know no different prick; it's just life here, life the way we know from young the way we're shown.
Stacked trapped in flats where our front doors don't face the road.
God CID spinning round in cars, shifting criminals at large, it's hard, not to think the bits are just a bing without the bars.
Jealousy's what the cheddar brings, for the cheddar it's anything goes, low enough to rob newly weds for their wedding rings
Everyday is warring, never give a warning, violence is the only way you settle things, everyday is hating, money that I'm making, jealous 'cause I'm moving on to better things, everyday is fighting, rolling in the night now. All you do is watch everyone else get far, you say that life is hard..

[Chorus:]
When your out here in this jungle.

Conclusion

The lyrics of this song are based upon what Professor Green viewed Hackney to be like. As this is where he grew up, he has a very good understanding of what is really happening there. He relates to hackney as being a jungle. Professor Green portrays hackney to be a very unsafe and violent area. There are a lot of gangs in hackney which he personifies to being like packs of animals ‘’ A Manor where man are like animals’’ He also compares hackney to be like the game jumanji ‘with cats with claws that will stab a yout’, by this he referring the cats to people that are eager for drugs and stab a yout means to stab a young person. The word food in the lyrics refers to drugs, and the people of Hackney will defend their territory like lions in a jungle. That’s why the word jungle is mentioned many times.

Professor Green is saying that it is very easy to tell if you are not from Hackney, by the way you dress, speak and carry yourself, he suggests that if you have no business in Hackney then it’s not a place to spend the night. Many disputes are settled not by talking, but by using their fists, guns or knives, in these areas actions speak louder than words. This is the way of life in Hackney for those born there. The police are always patrolling around Hackney trying to catch muggers, thieves and drug dealers.

It is likely that most of the criminals end up behind bars, even if you were once an honest person the atmosphere and the surroundings can have a negative effect on you, and you end up becoming part of that jungle.

Front Cover

This is the front cover that I have created through photoshop. I took a picture of the main character in a garden at night to give t a kind of soho look. I made sure that there was some light in the background and made the picture a little dark. Due to the fact that we have a character playing pool, I thought itt would be a good idea to add a pool table on the bottom left hand side of thee front cover and then and sign of soho so that the audience will immediately imagine the kind of scenery that could take place in the film before even watching it.

Final Backcover/Spine

This is the final backcover for the production, I have changed the layout of the tracks due to the fact that the white colour font was blending in with the light in the background. It was very hard to see, so instead of keeping the same layout and moving the tracks to the right, I thought it would be more unique if I created a stairs pattern.

The Spine/ Back Cover First draft

This is the spine that I have created on Photo shop for my print production work. I have used similar text that was used on the front cover to make it flow. Each of the colour fonts were chosen carefully as I needed to make sure that they were clearly seen due to the dark background. The background of both the front cover and the spine are almost almost alike to give it continuity.

Characterisation

Characterisation is an essential part of making a music video. It allows the audience to understand the genre of the music video and also understand the role of the artist. I have researched and analysed several characteristics of different artists so that I could have an Idea of what kind of characteristics I would like my actor in the music video to have. I have looked at artists with different genres so that I could know the full code and conventions for each. I focused on a specific music video that would help me decide on the type of characteristics I would like my actors to act.

The two videos have their similarities that contribute towards my music video due to the gangs and a death of a character:

Digipak Magazine Advert second draft

this is my second draft of the Digipak magazine advert, it incorporates many techniques used in other music adverts however i believe that it can be improved further by including more images that relate to the music video as well as changing the font style to match the style of music better.

Digipak Front Cover Draft

I have made a sketch of what the front cover and the spine of the digipak may look like. I took the image of the magazine advert that I had sketched earlier and put it as the front page. I did some research on the type of designs that CD cases have and from this I have learnt that the image of the spine and the front cover are different as in the artists are doing a different pose to make it unique. I thought it would be a good idea to follow that code and convention and sketch the same person on the front cover but sketch him doing a different pose. This way the audience can differenciate the difference between the spine and the front cover. Moreover from my research of Digipaks I noticed that every CD case has th barcodes at the spine rather than at the front. Again this is done to differenciate the front cover and the spine. In my sketch I also put the barcode at the back to let the audience know that that is the spine.

digipak research

Digipak
Digipak is a patented style of CD, DVD or BD packaging, and is a registered trademark of AGI World Ltd., an Atlas Holdings company.

Features
Digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside.
Since Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, and because there is no other common name for Digipak-style packaging made by other companies, the term digipak or Digi-Pak is often used generically, even when the media holder is a hub or "Soft Spot"rather than a full plastic tray.

Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets. Such packaging is less resistant to abrasion than jewel cases, so it tends to show signs of wear relatively quickly. Licensed digipak manufacturers such as domestic U.S. printer and disc replicator Oasis Disc Manufacturing recommend coating the raw printed paper with a protective UV coating, thus ensuring greater longevity.

Although less vulnerable to cracking than a jewel case, the disc tray inside the package (particularly the "teeth" of the hub which secure the disc in place) remains rather brittle and is prone to cracking if the package is crushed. Digipak-style cases grew in popularity among record labels and recording artists in the early 2000s.

Digipak with recycled tray made from sugarcane

Manufacturers have sought to reduce environmental impact and improve functionality by introducing recycled components into its trays; one has announced a 100% post-consumer PET tray made from recycled bottles, which also eliminates the need for the brittle "teeth". Another one goes one step further by totally eliminating the plastic tray and replacing it with a paper tray made from sugarcane and egg carton. Many printers use recycled or sustainable material for the board stock.

Historically, Digipak was only available in large quantities. However, AGI has recently introduced a new product called digipak i-create for the consumer market. Digipak i-create is a web-supported concept that is aimed at music, photo and creative markets.

History
IMPAC Group, Inc. originally owned the Digipak trademark. That company was acquired by MeadWestvaco (MWV) in 2000 and folded into its AGI Media division. Following this acquisition, the Digipak name and designs were licensed to manufacturers around the world. MWV sold AGI Media to Atlas Holdings in 2010.

Digipak Magazine Advert First draft

This is my first draft for the Digipak Magazine Advert, I created this using the techniques that i have analysed from other magazine advertisements such as a close up of the artists face, the inclusion of where to buy the digipak as well as good reviews of the song. Digipak magazine advert Draft

This is my sketch draft of the digipak magazine advert. Even though I will not be constructing the magazine advert, I thought it would be best to help my partner out in given him more ideas of the magazine advert. My partner Anthony that is constructed it has drawn his on sketch draft and he can then decide on which one he would like to go for. This sketch came to me from a freeze frame of the music video that my group had made. I thought that this would be very appropriate as it is related to the video. From doing research on adverts I decided follow the codes and conventions of certain adverts as I put heading of the film at the top of the page, whilst the image is at the centre of the page. The large image is there to draw the audiences attention towards it. However not allo magazine adverts are constructed this way. There are some that magazine adverts that have the images at the at the top of the page whilst the heading are in the middle of the page e.g. N-Dubz music magazine advert that I found on the NME music magazine

Code and Convention and Branding

Additional Research on Digipaks
Here is a CD digipack for the music artist Tinie Tempah. The front of the front cover is very similar to other digipacks in terms of the context of the page; there is a huge image of the artist in the middle of the cover. This is done to attract the target audience attention. In addition it also has the album title at the top of the cover. As you can see the style and colour on both the front and the spine is very similar, this allows continuity. It helps the image to flow. Moreover the style of font used for both front and spine are again the same. The image gives a convention of R&B genre due to the artist’s poses and fashion sense. The shine and sparkle around the artist connotes that he is a huge star and is a very popular artist. This art style on the artist’s front cover and spine is also highly representative of the R&B genre large bold bright fonts followed by a fairly dark background.
The glasses and the watch and bracelet that he is wearing demonstrate that the artist is a typical R&B music artist and he is very rich. This will allow his target audience to follow his trend and this would attract more audience. The image of Tinie Tempah’s arms wrapped around a city is very significant because this connotes that he can influence a lot of people with his style of music and in his way gain more popularity.
The spine continues the style presenting only vital information such as the artist’s name and the album title. The place where they displayed the artist’s name and the album title are on both sides of the spine, some of the other digipacks that I have researched have the name of the album and the name of the artist right in the middle for example Madonna’s album celebration.
The spine contains the full track list, a barcode, the record label and in very small prints copyright information. These key factors are what every digipack has. From researching and analysing these covers it is obvious that for my cover to be clear and understandable for an audience it has to have the artists name and possibly an album name also.

Research on Digipaks

Digipack Design Conventions

Digipaks were mostly known and introduced in the year 2000. Digipaks were increasingly becoming popular. It grew morewith music producers as it was less vulnerable to cracking then the industry standard jewel cases and had less of an environmental impact. Due to the upbringing of digipaks advertising was needed more in order for the public to buy them. Numerous adverts were put in various media outlets such as magazines. The images above shows a collection of album covers which are mainly to do with song artists and bands that play music within the same genre and more or less have the same conventions. I have researched and examined these covers closely to see the differences and similarities between them. I have come to a conclusion that the most common thing about these covers are that most of them display the artist’s name. Only a few displays the album title but this is also a common trend amongst them. Moreover each of them demonstrates images, which to the unknowing eye are completely random. Often the image on albums are something which means something to the band themselves and not to the buyer. For example I know that the Stone Roses cover is inspired by the 1968 Paris riots. Whilst travelling Europe, Lead singer Ian Brown spoke to a man who had been in the riots and told Brown that they had used lemons as an antidote to the tear gas; this is why they appear on the cover. Another example is the Arctic Monkeys cover with the man smoking on it. This was a photo taken of one of the bands friends who is also in a band. They gave him and his brother 70 pound to spend on a night out in Liverpool and this photo was taken at the end of the night. This connects to the point of the album which focuses on Saturday nights out and the Sunday mornings following. These examples show how it is often personal reason how bands chose there cover art, rather than something which connects with the audience. However the mystery of why bands chose certain covers makes fans want to know.
I took a picture of a Lady Gaga CD and the digipack that I got from HMV. The Cover is very appealing to de to the fact that it has her image as the attraction. This attacts the customers o come and buy it and because she is well known and also a very good artist.

Digipak Magazine advert research

Digipak Research
Digipak Magazine Ad Conventions
Digipaks started to be introduced into the media industry around the year 2000. With their popularity growing more with music producers as it was less vulnerable to cracking then the industry standard jewel cases and had less of an environmental impact. Due to the rising popularity of Digipaks more advertising was needed in order to get people to buy them so many adverts for Digipaks were placed in media outlets such as magazines. In order to learn more about the conventions of a Digipak magazine advert I decided to look at one in depth. This Advert for Gwen Stefani’s new album, which was placed in an American music magazine contains some of the conventions seen in other music advertisements seen in magazines, for example the main focus of the advert is of the star herself which helps to attract potential customers as they would recognise her face. In the advert they also have a photo of the album itself so that it becomes more recognisable in the shops. Probably the most used convention in all music magazine advertisement is including the places in which you can buy the Digipak. For example in the advert to the right the clearly have it shown that it is sold in HMV and also the fact that the background is black while the text for HMV is purple helps it to stand out and catch the readers attention.
I also carried out some primary research into albums magazine advertising. This advert, which I scanned from a copy of ‘XXI’, also shares a lot of the conventions of a typical advert. Firstly the name of the artist appears at the top of the page with the name of the album right underneath it, the advertisement also features an image of the rapper, which helps fans recognise the advert quick. However unlike the other adverts I analysed this one includes the date in which it is released, which is December 20th, this maybe because it’s so close to Christmas it tries to enforce that it could be a good gift for someone.
I also scanned another album magazine advert, however this one was from ‘Q’ like the advertisements before this also follows a similar layout however this one includes a convention not used by the others. This advert contains reviews of the song, which also include the names of the people who gave the reviews in big capital yellow letters, which stand out from the blue background. This is done in order to catch your attention as all the reviewers are all well known music reviewers with credibility, telling the viewer that this album must be good if these people say they are.
